Aged unmatched items: a triage order that holds
Sorting exclusively by sterling amount feels efficient until a small line hides a control failure. Here is the order we teach in Reconciliation Audit Essentials.
Start with age buckets that your reconciliation audit app already exposes. Anything past your internal SLA — often three or five working days in UK mid-market teams — jumps the queue regardless of size. Age is a proxy for forgotten ownership.
Next, filter for items that touch cash or regulatory reporting. A modest bank break that affects a client money account deserves attention before a large but well-understood timing difference on intercompany rent.
Then apply materiality with context
Only after age and risk filters should absolute amount dominate. Document why a large residual remains open: counterparty delay, feed lag, or investigation in progress. Vague “timing” comments fail this step.
Finally, park low-risk residuals in a named parking lot with a review date. Parking is allowed; invisible parking is not. Teams that skip the dated review recreate the same backlog next month.
