Match thresholds without false greens
Loosening auto-match rules to clear the queue is a quiet control failure. Tightening them overnight can flood analysts. There is a middle path.

Begin with a one-month shadow report: run proposed stricter thresholds in parallel without changing production matches. Measure how many additional manual lines appear and how many questionable auto-clears disappear.
Change thresholds by account family, not globally. Card clearing accounts tolerate different noise than client money accounts. Your reconciliation audit app almost certainly supports segmented rules — use that segmentation deliberately.
When you promote new rules, tell the desk which false greens you were targeting and what temporary volume spike to expect. Unannounced spikes look like system failure and get “fixed” by loosening rules again.
For a facilitated version of this exercise, see Variance Studio or ask about a private rules review under Assurance Circle.
